The Wahid Institute, now known as the Wahid Foundation, was founded on September 7, 2004, at a time when the world was still feeling the effects of the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New York, and Indonesia was facing multiple religious and ethnic conflicts that were fueling communal violence. The Wahid Foundation exists with a commitment to realize the intellectual vision of KH Abdurrahman Wahid, which is to advance Indonesian society and Islam, improve people's welfare, build democracy and fundamental justice, and promote non-violent peace around the world.
